Made up of a multitude of diversities, our people come from a range of backgrounds and cultures. Through all of the IT solutions we provide, we are able to meet very diverse customer needs.

Addressing the skills shortage

Like others in our industry, we recognise that the UK is facing a skills crisis with an ongoing shortage of people entering the workforce who have the right technical and digital skills. Together with Microsoft, we are working towards fostering a culture of lifelong learning. All of us working today will need to learn new skills, to make the most of this new world of opportunity, which is why SCC offers opportunities to enable employees to study for qualifications.

SCC works in partnership with local colleges, universities, and training providers to deliver accredited qualifications alongside our own induction programmes and in-house training courses. This includes:

20+ apprenticeship schemes running at any one time
Career pathways for level 2 right up to level 7 (Masters) programmes
Actively promoting our apprenticeship scheme at local career fairs

Our highly successful apprenticeship scheme offers opportunities to study role specific qualifications, with on-the-job experience and transferable skills needed to succeed in their chosen career. As part of our commitment to learning and development, SCC have been involved in school laptop programmes to enable local children to carry on their education from home. This includes:

Donating refurbished laptops to disadvantaged students through the Birmingham Education Foundation
Supporting our customer Coventry Building Society to provide laptops for schools by delivering onsite data erasure services, ensuring they are fit for purpose for home learning
Providing laptops and free data to support learning at home for 12 RSC Associate Schools in Birmingham and Warwickshire

While we have a strong focus on addressing the UK skills gap through learning and development initiatives, we are also working to make a change on a global basis. Through our continued investment in our global delivery centre, we support and nurture key skills for employees in Vietnam and Romania, winning awards in Romania for ‘Best Workplace’ and L&D Initiative of the Year.

Building a more sustainable future

With close alignment to the Microsoft vision, SCC are providing services that support our customer’s sustainability goals and reduce their carbon footprint. This includes providing energy-efficient endpoint devices and agile workspaces that allow users to work from anywhere on any device – and access their apps and data securely. We are also helping many customers move to cloud-based solutions such as Microsoft Azure, and offer:

Waste management and recycling services include refurbishing and compliant disposal
Solutions that extend the usable lifecycle of our customers end user devices
Reuse by erasing, repairing, and recycling end of life devices to recover reusable materials

Since 2009, we have been working with CO2balance to calculate and offset the CO2 emissions created from our Data Centres and offices. In doing so, we‘re proud to have achieved Carbon Zero status for these facilities through CO2balance’s support of a range of projects. The most prominent being its Energy Efficient Stove Project in Kenya, and more recently, its Borehole Rehabilitation Project in Uganda.

We continue to look at our own sustainability projects across our operations, with one recent initiative focusing on reducing the overall carbon footprint in our Fareham Data Centre by improving cooling efficiency. We’re also currently investigating the reuse of heat in our switch rooms, and have our recycling waste sorted and collected independently for onward processing at our own waste recycling centre in Birmingham.
