Microsoft SQL Server Can Now Go Anywhere!
As was revealed in last month’s Microsoft update, SQL Server 2017 has now been released. One of the main changes to the functionality is the fact they have a specific version for Linux. Clearly Microsoft historically have also wanted their SQL Server product deployed on their own underlying operating system, but with the database market being especially competitive enabling this reach to be extended is now a major factor in this decision.
So if you have a large Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server or even Ubuntu, SQL now has the ability to run and be deployed within these native operating systems.
Whilst the licensing metrics have not changed with the release, a few key enhancements have been made to some of the key features, including:
- SQL Server on Linux Active Directory integration
- Transport Layer Security (TLS) to encrypt data
- Machine Learning Services
- SQL Server Analysis Services
- SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) on Linux
- SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) on Windows
The good news is the SQL Server 2017 SKUs are now platform agnostic, so customers can run the software on either Windows or Linux once purchased through a volume licensing agreement. This makes administrative licence management easier as the operating system environment is irrelevant when it comes to licensing.
