You have the AI budget and the use cases. What you do not have is data anyone trusts, and the reason goes back further than you think.

Somewhere in your organisation there is an AI project that has quietly stopped moving. Not cancelled. Just stalled, with a reason that never quite gets written down.

Alex Viljoen, Head of Data at SCC, thinks he knows why. The decisions your data estate still runs on were made in 2005, and almost nothing since has changed them. Even the cloud migration. That moved the workloads and left the thinking exactly where it was.

He and Damon Crawford, Sales and Solutions Director at SCC Digital, see the consequences every week. AI returning five different answers to the same question. A room of senior people spending two weeks arguing about a definition before a project can restart. Twenty years of mergers, growth and compliance stacked on a structure that was never designed to carry it.

The number that stops most people is this. Out of every ten organisations Alex works with, around eight cannot answer the questions a data strategy requires. Not because they are behind, but because nobody has asked them in twenty years.

Damon is equally direct about cost. Getting to a credible strategy is a serious investment before any AI value appears, and the bill does not stop when the platform lands. Staying current, as legislation shifts and the business asks for something new, is where organisations struggle hardest.

What makes this urgent rather than merely awkward is that AI removes the cover. There was always someone quietly fixing the numbers before they reached a report. That role no longer exists. AI takes your estate exactly as it is.

If you are carrying an AI expectation into next year’s plan, this is the twenty minutes that tells you what you are up against.
