London Fire Brigade
The situation
London Fire Brigade is the busiest fire and rescue service in the UK, responding to over 250,000 calls annually whilst serving a population of 9 million Londoners. The operations centre is the nerve centre where incoming emergency calls are received and incidents are managed. Control room staff need to see real-time information about incident location, available resources, personnel status and ongoing operations.
The brigade identified an opportunity to embrace new technology that would give control staff better situational awareness. Displaying live incident data, mapping information and resource tracking in a format that is immediately intelligible under high-pressure conditions is not straightforward.
What SCC did
SCC designed and installed a video wall and supporting audio-visual technology in the operations centre. The system is built to display multiple data streams simultaneously, incident maps, resource allocation dashboards, live feeds from the scene. The technology needed to be resilient and reliable because failures have direct consequences for emergency response.
SCC worked with the brigade to understand exactly how control staff operate and what information needs to be visible at different stages of an incident.
What changed
Control room staff now have integrated visual information that previously required consulting separate screens or printouts. Decisions about resource dispatch can be made with better spatial awareness. Personnel tracking is instantaneous rather than relying on radio calls and manual updates.
What the client learned
London Fire Brigade recognised that better information tools for control staff translate directly into improved emergency response outcomes. Investing in technology that presents complex, real-time data clearly and reliably is not a convenience, it is an operational necessity in an environment where every second of decision-making time matters.
SCC have helped LFB deliver this complex project in our operations centre, benefitting both the control staff and the people of London.
