Croydon Health Services NHS Trust

The situation

Croydon Health Services serves nearly 400,000 people in South London. Training staff, ensuring clinicians stay current, building capability across the organisation, is central to delivering quality care. The training facilities at Shirley House, where much of this work happened, had deteriorated. The environment was tired. Spaces were dated. Staff found themselves learning in conditions that didn’t match the standard of care they were expected to deliver.

The Trust faced a choice: accept the tired facilities, or invest in creating spaces that matched their aspirations for the organisation. The physical environment matters, it signals what an organisation values.

What SCC did

SCC partnered with Croydon Health Services to redesign the training facilities. The work was primarily physical: repainting, refreshing, modernising the learning spaces. SCC brought logistical capability and an understanding that these were not simply buildings, they were spaces where the organisation’s future was being built.

What changed

Training staff came to learn in an environment that reflected their importance. The physical upgrade was visible and measurable, fresh paint, modern furniture, functional spaces. But the impact was deeper: it elevated morale because it signalled that the organisation valued training and valued staff.

Better training environments correlate with better learning outcomes. Staff felt more invested in development. The Trust could be more confident that training programmes were happening in conditions that supported the learning.

What the client learned

Croydon Health Services learned that investing in the physical environment of learning creates real returns. The Trust discovered that facilities matter, because they communicate value, not only function. By choosing to invest in these spaces, the organisation reinforced its commitment to developing staff and, by extension, to the quality of care it provides.

SCC’s support has given us a beautifully repainted space so that staff can have a nice environment, a professional environment, in which to embark on training.
