Browne Jacobson

The situation

Browne Jacobson, a full-service law firm, faced a question that was becoming urgent across the profession: how should lawyers engage with generative AI? The technology was moving fast, but most lawyers didn’t have hands-on experience with it. They couldn’t advise clients on risks and opportunities they hadn’t explored themselves.

The firm wanted to build capability internally and do it safely. They needed a partner who could help them experiment with AI tools in a controlled environment, understand what the technology could and couldn’t do, and then build something their lawyers could use daily.

What SCC did

Rather than deploying a finished solution, SCC and Browne Jacobson started with a proof of concept. They built a prototype to learn what would actually work in practice. Once they understood the shape of the problem, they developed the production tool: a secure instance of Azure OpenAI integrated into Microsoft Teams, the platform lawyers used every day.

The decision to build within Teams mattered. Lawyers didn’t need to learn new software or adopt unfamiliar workflows. They could interact with AI where they already worked.

What changed

The tool went from concept to working product quickly. Lawyers began using it daily for tasks like summarising documents, spotting inconsistencies, and exploring how legal precedent applied to client scenarios. The experience was direct and immediate, not an abstract discussion about what AI might do someday. It was about what AI was actually doing now.

The firm could now advise clients from direct experience. When a client asked if AI posed risks or created opportunities for their business, Browne Jacobson’s lawyers could speak from what they’d learned building and using the tool. That credibility mattered enormously.

What the client learned

Browne Jacobson discovered that exploring emerging technology didn’t require choosing between safety and speed. By working methodically and partnering with people who understood their culture, they could experiment at pace without recklessness. The experience changed how the firm thinks about staying current with technology that affects their clients’ businesses.

Working with SCC felt like a natural fit. Our cultures were clearly aligned and we quickly developed a shared understanding of what needed to be done to tackle the challenges ahead. We had a productive discussion on the next steps, ensuring we could deliver the solution practically and in line with our goals.
