Hyperscale and Server-Based Storage See Boost in Enterprise Spending

Total worldwide enterprise storage systems factory revenue grew 2.8% year over year to $9.1 billion during the third quarter of 2015 (3Q15), according to IDC. Total capacity shipments were up 31.5% year over year to 33.1 exabytes during the quarter. Revenue growth was strongest within the group of original design manufacturers (ODMs) that sell directly to hyperscale data centres the analyst said. This portion of the market was up 23.4% year-over-year to $1.3 billion. Sales of server-based storage were up 9.9% during the quarter and accounted for $2.1 billion in revenue. External storage systems remained the largest market segment, but sales in this segment were down slightly (-3.1%) to $5.8 billion.
