SCC supports St Mary’s Primary School with new football equipment

SCC has helped transform playtime and PE lessons at St Mary’s CE Primary School in Moss Side, Manchester, by donating new footballs for every class – replacing the single worn-out ball the school had previously been sharing across more than a dozen classes.

The initiative was led by Steve Greig, an Account Director in SCC’s Central Government team, and his wife Mrs Morris, a teacher at the school.

After hearing about pupils running between classrooms to find a ball, often one with no leather left on it, the pair initially donated a couple of new balls they purchased themselves while on holiday, before Steve asked if SCC could step in to provide wider support.

In November, Steve personally delivered the brand-new SCC sponsored footballs to each class at St Mary’s, and also ran a football skills session in the school hall.

“The school is thrilled,” Steve said. “It’s such a small gesture for us, but it means the world to the children. Seeing their excitement when they each got their own ball was brilliant.”

St Mary’s is in one of Manchester’s most deprived areas, and the school places a big emphasis on physical activity, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Headteacher Jenny McGarry said the donation will make a meaningful difference.

She said: “Steve and SCC’s support has made such a big difference to our children. We really push physical activity and sportsmanship, and this donation has helped us make this even stronger.”

The school’s girls’ football team has recently made the final of their league and will soon play at The Cliff, the historic Manchester United training ground where generations of players have developed their game.

SCC is proud to support local communities and help young people access the tools and opportunities they deserve.
