The Safe Surgery System can work for you!

How do you cope with problems around patient misidentification and the costs associated with mistreatments, inefficient use of resources, surgical errors, litigation and compensation, and the loss of patient confidence?

We are working with Safe Patient Systems and Motorola to fill the urgent need for a simple technology-based solution; a standardised, fully managed, failsafe patient identification system that links existing hospital systems and works right through the patient journey from admission to discharge.

It is estimated that more than 2,900 patient safety incidents related to misuse of wristbands in 2007¹. As a result the National Patient Safety Agency sent out a Safer Practice Notice that states by 18th July 2009 all NHS organisations in England and Wales that use patient wristbands should generate and print all patient wristbands from the hospital demographic system (e.g. Patient Administration System; PAS) at the patient’s bedside, wherever possible.

From as little as £1 per patient we can provide a 24x7 managed Safe Patient Tracking solution which is the answer to patient identification at every point of care throughout the patient journey. In place of unreliable handwritten wristbands and paper-based record-keeping, the system uses RFID tagged or barcoded wristbands digitally coded with identification data linked to a digital photograph of the patient. Using a scanner built into the latest Motorola hand-held mobile devices or linked to any PC and laptop, practitioners can electronically confirm the identity of the patient while planning, carrying out or recording an intervention anywhere in the hospital. Wristband writing errors vanish. Patient identification becomes automatic and foolproof.

Clinical negligence payments in 2007/8 were £456 million². Wrong Site Surgery (WSS) is a major cause of morbidity and litigation in the Health Service. A common cause of WSS is last minute changes made to a printed operating list, causing confusion and mistakes. Also identification of the patient, the operation and side is generally dependant on manual systems which are fraught with problems.

From as little as £3 per patient we can provide a 24x7 managed Safe Surgery System solution which provides electronic support for the critical pre-operative process checks needed to be completed by clinical staff, guaranteeing effective tracking and verification throughout the surgical journey to prevent wrong side/wrong site surgery. Electronic communication with the whole surgical team ensures that patient safety is greatly increased and theatre time is more effectively used (right patient; right checks; right operation; right time).
