Kings College London

“As a result of this major ICT infrastucture project, King’s College London has a powerful new communications network.”

King’s College London is one of Britain's oldest universities and a global top 25 university, with an international reputation for providing outstanding teaching and research.

This prestigious University required a partner who could assist with the complete refresh of its ICT infrastruture to ensure it fully supported the tens of thousands of students and staff who relied upon it for their teaching.  SCC presented a high availability managed platform running VMware, underpinned by a Microsoft solution, combining the benefits of Exchange Server 2007, Office Communications Server 2007 and SharePoint Server 2007.

The project required a new build of the proposed infrastructure in SCC’s Data Center environment, deploying design and consultancy experience to gather the bespoke requirements of the College. The basis of the design involved virtualisation, where ever possible, to minimize the infrastructure costs.

This required many of the supporting services to the main Microsoft applications being implemented in a VMware ESX server estate. The hardware consisted of HP Blade Servers, a large HP EVA Storage and SAN solution - protected through Symantec’s NetBackup environment and an HP MSL tape library.

In addition to the core infrastructure - which delivers mail, instant messaging, presence awareness and collaboration functions through SharePoint services -  the College also asked SCC to include a mail archive, to minimize the on-going management cost of email data. The Symantec Enterprise Vault solution was implemented to achieve this, during the second phase of the project. The new Data Centre hosted infrastructure is underpinned by Microsoft’s Active Directory, and connected to the College through the Education sector’s Joint Academic Network (JANET).

As a result of this major ICT infrastucture project, King’s College London has delivered a powerful new electronic communications environment that will benefit its staff and students. Moving forward, it seeks to further enhance the network through the introduduction of personalized portals for its staff and students - leveraging  SharePoint services - and offer Voice over IP and video and voice conferencing facilities - using Office Communication Services.
